Morning hikes

Morning hikes

Morning hikes are an important element of many of our wellness tours. There’s no better place to connect with the Icelandic landscape than to walk through it. Your guide will lead you on some of the most exciting trails in the country passing canyons, waterfalls, and craggy peaks away from the tourist crowds. You can walk at your own pace, and along the way you’ll likely spot wildlife, particularly coastal birds.

Who are the morning hikes for?

Who are the morning hikes for?

Our morning hikes are for all levels of fitness, so don’t worry if you haven’t had much hiking experience. Our wellness guides will ensure that the trails picked are suitable for you, and as the tour progresses these will get a little more challenging each day, building up the difficulty level throughout the week.

A typical week's hiking plan

A typical week's hiking plan

While it would be simply impossible to list every trail hike in Iceland, there are some notable walks taken on our trips in the beautiful surroundings of Hveragerdi, the small town where your spa hotel is located. Below we have listed each morning hike on a week-long Well Iceland hiking tour to give you some idea of a typical tour with us.

Day 1

Day 1

On the first proper day of your Well Iceland tour, you’ll join your guide for an easy hike along the trails near to the spa hotel. It’s fairy flat terrain, though it will begin to prepare you for the more challenging hikes later in the week. Spend a few hours enjoying the clear Icelandic air, chatting with your guide and fellow guests, looking out over some fabulous scenery, and breaking in your hiking boots.

Day 2

Day 2

Today’s morning hike will be slightly more challenging than the last. Though you will be walking along similar trails around Hveragerdi, the route will be an hour longer or so. These trails showcase some of the most diverse and fascinating Icelandic scenery. When you have such incredible views to look at and having got somewhat used to the trails from yesterday’s hike, you may not even notice the extra time.

Day 3

Day 3

Again, today’s morning hike will push you’re limits just enough that you’ll build up your strength, but it won’t feel too hard. Taking a different trail from Hveragerdi, you’ll hike along the banks of ariver that flows down to Reykjadalur. Along the way, you’ll pass a towering waterfall in a nearby gorge and the bubbling muddy hot springs. Reach a natural pool feed by warm water from the hot springs and spend an hour or so having a well-earned soak before returning to the hotel for lunch.

Day 4

Day 4

Today’s hike will be moved to the afternoon when you spend some time hiking around the might Gullfoss Waterfall and the world-famous geysers geothermal fields. There is nothing more spectacular than watching water tumble off the side of a cliff egde and crash down into the lagoon below, or be shot more than 20 meters into the air. Today’s hike won’t be the most challenging, but it will surely be the highlight.

Day 5

Day 5

By now you’ll have more of an understanding of the trail system in Iceland. This morning, your guide will take you out to the Thingvellir National Park where you’ll push yourself on one of the longer trail hikes. Along the way, you’ll discover the biodiversity of the plant life and avifauna, as well as admiring Lake Þingvallavatn. It’s one of the most gorgeous places in the country and not too be missed.

Day 6

Day 6

Saving the best till last. On your final full day, you’ll join your guide on a full day hike and adventure to Thórsmörk, a mountain ridge named after the Norse god Thor. Hike along the glaciers to the Stakkholtsgjá and admire the waterfall and surrounding network of granite peaks. Your efforts will be rewarded with some of the most astounding views and unforgettable memories you can take away from the land of fire and ice.
